To my mother (1946–2022)
On November 2, 1958 RAI broadcast a debate in which public figures and intellectuals across the political spectrum discussed Boris Pasternak’s recent rejection of the Nobel Prize in Literature due to pressure from Soviet authorities.
Pasternak’s controversial novel, Doctor Zhivago, banned in Russia and first published internationally in Italian, examined the tensions between the demands of the public sphere and the private, between individual destiny and unfulfilled potential.
At that moment in time, in a sleepy inland town, a young man had set to himself the task of writing a daily journal. By the end of that year, he had left most of the pages in the journal blank. Also in the same town at that moment in time, a young girl had her first photographic portrait taken.
The young man was my father. The young girl was my mother.
